Alexander Vindman, the former Army lieutenant colonel who testified during the Trump impeachment proceedings, has officially entered the race for the U.S. Senate in Florida.

Vindman — a military intelligence officer who gained national attention when he provided testimony to Congress in the first Trump impeachment inquiry — announced his campaign as he seeks to unseat Republican incumbents in a key statewide contest. His decision to run marks his first foray into elected office.

In announcing his bid, Vindman emphasized his commitment to public service and national security, drawing on his experience in the Pentagon and on Capitol Hill. He framed his campaign around issues important to Florida voters, including economic opportunity, veterans’ affairs, and government accountability.

Vindman’s candidacy adds a high-profile name to the Democratic field in Florida, a politically competitive state with closely watched Senate races. As a retired Army officer and former National Security Council staffer, he brings a background in defense and foreign policy that supporters say will appeal to moderate and independent voters.

The race is expected to attract significant attention and funding, given Florida’s status as a pivotal battleground and the stature of both major party nominees. Vindman will face a primary before advancing to the general election, where he will compete against Republican contenders and other Democrats seeking the nomination.

His entry into the Senate contest quickly drew reactions from political analysts, who see his national profile as both an asset and a potential lightning rod in a deeply polarized environment. Vindman said he plans to travel across the state to meet voters and build support as the campaign unfolds.
