The wreakage left by a devastating explosion early Friday at the Accurate Energetic Systems munitions facility in Tennessee has officially been declared beyond rescue—authorities say all 18 workers unaccounted for are now presumed dead.
According to the Humphreys County Sheriff’s office, over 300 responders searched nearly every inch of the site but failed to locate any survivors. The operation has now transitioned from a rescue mission to a recovery effort.
Officials confirmed the blast obliterated one of the facility’s buildings on its 1,300-acre campus in Bucksnort. The force was so intense it rattled nearby homes and scattered debris across a wide radius.
Investigators from the FBI and ATF have taken charge of determining what triggered the explosion. Their efforts are hindered by lingering unstable materials and unexploded ordnance within the structure.
To establish the identities of the deceased, medical examiners will rely on DNA testing and phone geolocation data. Meanwhile, the facility’s operator has halted all operations, expressing condolences to the affected families.
The local community is reeling from the tragedy, which ranks among the deadliest industrial incidents in Tennessee in recent years. Saddle-towns around the site have begun organizing memorials and offering support for loved ones of the missing.
