Amir Amiry, a U.S. citizen held in Afghanistan since December 2024, has been released and is en route back to the United States following months of negotiation.
U.S. envoy Adam Boehler confirmed the outcome, saying Amiry’s release was secured in coordination with Qatari officials who acted as mediators. During his detention, Amiry was routinely monitored—Qatar maintained health checks and diplomatic lines to ensure his well-being.
After being brought to an airport gate in Kabul to board the flight home, Amiry reportedly became emotional upon seeing the U.S. delegation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the news, thanking Qatar for “helping secure his freedom” and affirming the administration’s drive to bring home all Americans unjustly held abroad.
This marks one of several successful detainee releases this year aided by Qatar’s diplomatic role as a go-between in Afghanistan.
