An American missionary based in Niger has been kidnapped, U.S. officials confirm, and intelligence suggests the abduction may have been carried out by militants with ties to the Islamic State-linked network operating in the country’s north.
The aid worker, described as an American pilot affiliated with an evangelical mission organisation, was seized Tuesday evening in the Plateau neighbourhood of the Nigerien capital of Niamey as he headed to the airport. Reports say three unidentified men carried out the abduction, heading west into the volatile Tillabéri region where Islamist insurgents are active.
U.S. officials have been notified of the situation and are coordinating with Nigerien authorities. Sources say the first 48 hours are especially critical, given that hostage-holders often transfer captives quickly to more remote areas or affiliate networks, complicating recovery efforts.
The development comes amid growing concern over regional stability in West Africa, with Niger facing persistent insurgent pressure along its borders with Mali and Burkina Faso. The motive behind the abduction—whether ransom, propaganda or political leverage—remains unclear as investigations continue.
