Anderson Cooper supported CNN’s hosting of Donald Trump despite his troubling town hall remarks. In Thursday’s Anderson Cooper 360 monologue, he said ignoring Trump wouldn’t make him go away. Cooper questioned whether isolating themselves in echo chambers would solve the problem. Cooper acknowledged that Trump is the Republican presidential frontrunner, despite outrage. He encouraged viewers to listen to different views and challenge misinformation.

Trump called January 6 a “beautiful day” and avoided commenting on the Ukraine-Russia crisis during the town hall. Trump calling Collins a “nasty person” for questioning the Mar-a-Lago delay in collecting classified information troubled Cooper. Cooper was also upset when Trump called a black law enforcement officer participating in the January 6 disturbance a “thug,” a phrase he frequently uses to characterize black individuals. Cooper was genuinely disturbed by the audience’s response, notably their laughter at Trump’s ridicule of E. Jean Carroll after he was found guilty of sexually abusing her.

Cooper acknowledged Trump’s potential return to the White House despite his dislike of him. He cautioned that half the nation supports Trump and might elect him again. Cooper stressed the necessity of listening to Trump’s January 6 defense, 2020 election assertions, and Ukraine war comments. He called these ideas “disturbing” and questioned CNN’s hosting.

CNN’s platform for Trump was condemned by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Joy Behar, while Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene commended it. CNN boss Chris Licht defended the choice, emphasizing the importance of reflecting a large segment of America, even if it drew uncomfortable applause. Cooper believes CNN’s platform for Trump’s remarks and vital conversations was worth the backlash.
