A South Carolina man identified as an anti-Elon Musk activist is recovering from severe burns after a botched vandalism attempt at a Tesla dealership ended in flames. Authorities reported that the suspect, whose identity has not been released, targeted the electric vehicle showroom late Monday night with the intent to deface several vehicles and damage the property.
Investigators say the activist was carrying flammable liquids, intending to set fire to a display of Tesla vehicles while spray-painting anti-Musk slogans. However, the situation quickly spiraled out of control when the accelerant ignited prematurely, engulfing the suspect in flames.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene moments after receiving multiple 911 calls from dealership employees and bystanders. The man was found on the ground, suffering from burns while several Tesla vehicles sustained minor fire damage. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains under medical care.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect had a documented history of attending anti-Musk protests and was part of an online group critical of Tesla’s business practices and Elon Musk’s political influence. Charges including arson, vandalism, and trespassing are expected to be filed once the individual is medically cleared.
Tesla has not released an official statement but dealership management confirmed the location is open for business while repairs are underway.
