Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has pushed back hard against former ICE Director Tom Homan after he threatened to refer her to the Department of Justice for allegedly interfering with federal immigration enforcement.
The dispute centers on a recent webinar organized by Ocasio-Cortez’s office, designed to educate immigrants on their constitutional rights during encounters with federal agents. Homan claimed the event could be considered obstruction of law enforcement, prompting him to explore potential legal action.
Speaking to constituents during a town hall in Queens, Ocasio-Cortez defiantly responded to the accusations. “There’s nothing illegal about informing people of their rights,” she said. “If they think it is, they can come for me.”
She emphasized that the event was not only lawful but essential, especially for vulnerable communities who may not be fully aware of their legal protections during ICE interactions. Her comments drew loud support from attendees, many of whom expressed concern over aggressive immigration tactics.
Homan, who served as border czar under the Trump administration, remains firm in his stance, asserting that actions like this may cross legal boundaries and require DOJ review.
The confrontation highlights the growing divide between federal immigration policy hardliners and progressive lawmakers, with the battle over public education and immigrant rights becoming increasingly personal and political.
