New York City Councilwoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed dismay at the very discriminating’ remarks made by a Japanese government official.
New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is taking heat for comments she made about Japan’s lack of tolerance during a congressional visit to that country.
As part of a nearly 40-minute-long Instagram video, Ocasio-Cortez called out Japan, expressing dismay at a member of the Japanese government’s “extremely discriminating” statements towards the LGBT community.
A member of the Japanese administration “was captured in off-the-record comments expressing highly discriminating words towards LGBT people,” she said in a live-streamed Instagram video on Monday.
“I think it’s fair to characterize this as [a] rather stunning development,” Ocasio-Cortez continued.
The lawmaker said that marriage equality and LGBT protections being adopted in Japan will have a profound impact on the ties between the two countries.
But, political observers and journalists were not happy with Ocasio-Cortez giving Japan advice on how to run its government.
The visit was summarized by political journalist Ian Miles Cheong in a tweet: “AOC is presently in Japan demanding that their government adopt LGBTQ alphabet wokeness, or else.”
Journalist Sameera Khan responded by posting news articles from Time and Bloomberg on the controversial trip, saying, “Japan’s internal matters are none of AOC’s business.”
User agreement: “[K]ind of a far off thought, but how bout we focus on America,” suggesting that Ocasio-Cortez keep her political efforts domestic.
Time’s front page read, “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats push Japan to promote LGBT rights.” According to Bloomberg, “Ocasio-Cortez believes it’s ‘essential’ that Japan pushes forward with Gay rights.”
Ocasio-Cortez reminded her 8.6 million Instagram followers that “Japan is the only member of the G-7 that does not have marriage equality and LGBT anti-discrimination equality rights in place.”
About 520,000 people have favored the video she uploaded to Instagram.
Ocasio-Cortez remarked, “The more we can all share our principles across countries, the more we can collaborate.” This was about cooperation between the United States and Japan.
Not just in Japan, but “beyond borders,” she also stressed the significance of “women’s rights and LGBT, trans rights and marriage equality.”
Ocasio-Cortez also drew attention when she traveled to the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, and detailed her opinions on the trip in a series of long Instagram posts.
“Learning about the physics and magnitude of radiation has helped me feel more at peace. In general, I feel better when I have more information. But, it may not be the case for many individuals “On her way to Fukushima, Ocasio-Cortez sent a letter to readers.
It’s been labeled a “[m]assive cultural change” in favor of nuclear energy by one Twitter user who specializes in energy policy.
He also mentioned that many of her 9 million followers are young women.
According to Morning Consult, in 2019, Ocasio-Cortez remarked of nuclear energy, “I don’t have a strong anti- or pro-position on it.”
The environmentalist lawmaker allegedly stated at the time that the possibility of nuclear power in her “Green New Deal” proposal “leaves the door open on nuclear so that we can have that dialogue.”
Fox News Digital’s request for a response from Congresswoman. Ocasio-office Cortez’s went unanswered.
