AOC and her fans (Yes, both of them) might be very disappointed. There is a distinct possibility that she will not get to speak at the Democratic National Convention. Centrists are objecting to her speaking especially since progressives Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are already scheduled to speak.
It is kind of shocking since AOC is the real Speaker of the House. You would think they would make time for her. Centrists are afraid too many progressives will make the Democrats sound like Stalinists. They may be socialists or communists, they just don’t want anyone to know it before election day.
Gov. Ed Rendell told Politico:
“I think [Vermont Sen.] Bernie [Sanders] and [Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth] Warren will speak, and they’ll represent the progressive wing of the party very ably.”
“If you picked AOC, why wouldn’t you pick Katie Porter or why wouldn’t you pick Madeleine Dean or Mary Gay Scanlon?”
The final speaker’s list will be released next week. If AOC is not picked, I assure you the DNC elite will hear from AOC. I don’t think they can afford that but they also can’t afford her alienating the voters. They’re between a rock and a hard place.
Spokespeople for Ocasio-Cortez, who represents parts of the Bronx and Queens, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Although AOC is an inspirational figure for younger left-wing voters, she’s also a frequent point of focus for President Trump, who mocks her as an ill-informed radical.
Trump on Thursday slammed Ocasio-Cortez as “a real beauty” who “knows nothing about the economy.” He singled out policies in her Green New Deal proposal.
