In an Instagram post, Ocasio-Cortez stated, “All day today, because of a rumor, I had to deal with a lot of really nasty rhetoric and attacks.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, recently said on Instagram that “large accounts” were spreading false information about an event where military people from service academies were present. She said this in response to “rumors” spread by left-wing activists that she is hosting a high school military recruitment fair.
Representatives Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) held a “students service fair” on Monday for high school students in the Bronx to “learn about the resources available to students” through the district office and to connect with service academies.
A progressive lawmaker who had advocated for a ban on some kinds of military recruiting starting in 2020 was criticized for supporting a ceremony that included Marines, Naval Academy students, Air Force troops, and Coast Guardsmen.
On Monday night, Ocasio-Cortez stated on Instagram, “Politics is so crazy because people can just wake up and makeup whatever they want to say about you.” There was a story going around that I was holding a military recruitment expo for high school students today, but that was all made up. Do you think that I would do it? No… But people found out that this was true. This was the core idea that everyone agreed on. The problem is that when high-profile accounts post about it, the news travels quickly, and people start telling me not to go to the event or to cancel my plans to do so.
The lawmaker remarked that making up stories is not simply a right-wing activity and that everyone who has done so concerning this incident should take back what they said.
Since today, horrible stories and hacks have been spread about me. The liberal delegate said that the problem was not solely a conservative one. Worse, when some of these accounts started spreading this utterly fraudulent allegation, it got a lot of attention. The discovery of an account with 12,000 likes raises real safety concerns, but I think we might all take a moment of quiet contemplation since things are rarely what they appear.
Ocasio-Cortez said that if you want to go to military schools like West Point, you need a nomination from a member of Congress, a senator, or another federally elected individual.
“We must tell people about that process, and there were a couple of people there to talk about it,” Ocasio-Cortez said, trying to clear the air about the military guest’s presence at the event. although “even that was such a small part of the tables and things there,” there was a lot more in general.
She also said that “activists and places that lean left, in particular, will get it wrong” when it comes to the large accounts. What makes them different from other individuals in power if they always say they are right?
Why should anyone believe someone who has a history of disseminating misleading information and then not taking responsibility for it? Also, Ocasio-Cortez contributed to this.
Since these attempts affect young people more than older people, Ocasio-Cortez proposed an amendment to a 2020 House Committee on Appropriations bill that would outlaw military recruitment on live-streaming platforms like Twitch.
On the House floor, Ocasio-Cortez said, “Children should not be targeted for many marketing purposes, including joining the military.” She worked hard to get the House to pass the change, but she was not successful.
Since all the fuss about the event, the congresswoman has been accused of being hypocritical because she was part of a program that took high school students to military schools.
“Hey, @AOC” is the format. What may be going on? Nothing funny can be said about this at all. You weren’t sent to Washington to support the military-industrial complex. Instead, you were sent there to oppose imperialism and stand up for the working class and the poor. Could you tell me about what you’re doing right now? One person, whose profile said they were an “eco-socialist,” added “Stop it” with a picture of the event’s flyer.
