Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), a member of the Democratic Party’s progressive “Squad” of lawmakers, has broken ranks with other members of the “Squad” in order to condemn the “unacceptable” pro-Palestine marches that took place in New York City. In a statement, AOC stressed how critical it is to condemn bigotry and antisemitism while showing solidarity with those who have been targeted. The lawmaker voiced her disapproval of the demonstration that took place in Times Square just one day after Hamas began its attacks on Israel. The congresswoman noted the timing of the event.
This comment by AOC differentiates her from some of her progressive colleagues, such as Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Cori Bush, who have all been outspoken critics of Israel in the past. AOC’s declaration comes after Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Cori Bush. AOC backed the rights of New Yorkers to express their disapproval of both the attacks by Hamas on innocent civilians and the injustices that Palestinians experience as a result of the occupation.
Other members of the “Squad,” such as Greg Casar and Summer Lee, have also voiced their disagreement with the Jewish state, which raises issues about the cohesiveness of the group’s stance on the issue of the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
In addition to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, another member of the Squad, Congressman Jamaal Bowman, also condemned the march. He voiced his amazement and disgust at the event and urged people to recognize their shared humanity.
The pro-Palestine march that took place in Times Square took place under heightened tensions in the wake of missile launches, violence, and murders that occurred in Israel, as well as continued attacks by Hamas on the country. The situation in the region is still quite contentious, and there are a number of different points of view on the war and potential solutions that could lead to peace.
