A 42-year-old man, Joshua Runkles, was taken into custody at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, ahead of the Charlie Kirk memorial service after being found inside with a loaded pistol, a revolver, several knives, and expired law enforcement credentials.
Authorities say Runkles claimed he was providing private security for a known guest, but his credentials were declared invalid and he was not authorized to act in any law enforcement capacity at the event. He has been charged with impersonation of an officer (a felony) and carrying weapons into a restricted area (a misdemeanor).
The Secret Service, working with local law enforcement, arrested him before the stadium secured its perimeter. He was released on bond, and the investigation into his motives is ongoing. The memorial event is expected to draw more than 100,000 attendees.
