Representative of New York’s Democratic Party, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, has been the subject of an ethics inquiry, according to a statement released by the House Ethics Committee on Wednesday (D-NY).
Ocasio-Cortez may have broken House Ethics standards, according to a report released by the Office of Congressional Ethics on June 23, 2022, which called for an inquiry by the House Ethics Committee.
To postpone the problem affecting Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which was presented to the Committee by the Office of Congressional Ethics on June 23, 2022, Committee Democrats Susan Wild of Pennsylvania and Committee Republicans Michael Guest of Michigan made a joint statement.
The referral or extension itself, the necessary notice of such extension, and the identification of the subject of the action are not indicative of an infringement, as stated in the statement.
The Committee’s members have promised to “explain its course of action on this matter” during the first session of the 118th Congress. If the Committee Rules are approved, then we may move forward.
Notably absent from the Committee’s statement was an explanation of the alleged misconduct by Cortez that Ocasio has been accusing her of. After Ocasio-Cortez attended last year’s Met Gala, several groups concerned about ethical issues voiced their disgust.
Ocasio-Cortez has been accused by ethical organizations of taking “an unethical gift” after accepting two complimentary tickets to the Met Gala in 2021. Unfortunately, the tournament is only worth between $50,000 and $35,000.
The American Accountability Foundation sent a letter to the Senate in September 2021 expressing their displeasure with Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-attendance Cortez’s at the Met Gala, with per-seat costs estimated between $35,000 and $50,000, violates clause 5 of Rule XXV of the Rules of the House of Representatives.
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) has also called for a probe of Cortez’s presence at the Met Gala with Ocasio.
What follows is an excerpt from a statement written by Kendra Arnold, the FACT director at the time.
Legislators are barred from receiving any gifts due to a strict policy. No matter how crucial it is, members will only accept it if it is on the authorized list. A combination of the member’s admission that she did not pay for the item and the inference that she received the ticket due to her “responsibilities in monitoring” the gift-giver is enough to warrant an investigation. The House gift rule was instituted to prevent this kind of situation.
But the congresswoman’s staff is “confident” that the Ethics Committee will close the case.
To hear Hitt tell it, Ocasio-Cortez has integrity and has never accepted money from lobbyists or companies. Things will be ironed out soon.
