In a recent interview with Bill Maher, liberal author Fran Lebowitz made headlines by calling for President Joe Biden to dissolve the U.S. Supreme Court before the end of his term, claiming the current court has become “Trump’s harem.” The controversial statement came during a discussion where Lebowitz expressed frustration over a recent Supreme Court ruling that granted former President Donald Trump substantial presidential immunity for acts committed while in office.
Lebowitz criticized the court, stating, “It’s so disgraceful, this court, that it shouldn’t even be allowed to be called the Supreme Court.” She argued that the court’s decisions, especially with Trump-appointed justices, have distorted its role, effectively giving Trump and future presidents unprecedented legal protections.
When Maher challenged Lebowitz’s idea of dissolving the court, she stood by her comments, suggesting that Biden, as the sitting president, has the authority to make such a drastic move in response to what she sees as unchecked power.
The Supreme Court ruling in question involved presidential immunity, stating that while former presidents have protection for official acts, they can still be prosecuted for unofficial actions. This ruling, delivered by a conservative majority, including three Trump-nominated justices, was celebrated by Trump but met with criticism from Biden and others who argued it sets a dangerous precedent.
This is not the first time Lebowitz has made extreme statements about Trump. In 2019, she suggested on Maher’s show that Trump deserved far more than impeachment and made a provocative comment about turning him over to Saudi authorities, for which she later apologized.
Lebowitz’s latest remarks add to ongoing debates over the Supreme Court’s future, with President Biden already advocating for reforms, including term limits and a code of conduct for justices.
