Avery Koonce, a 19-year-old cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy, was found lifeless in her dorm room on September 4, 2024. An autopsy has revealed that she died from pneumonia, specifically caused by “paeniclostridium sordelli sepsis complicating parainfluenza laryngotraceobronchitis,” according to the El Paso County Coroner’s Office. The viral infection had weakened her immune system, allowing the bacteria to flourish, leading to her untimely death.
Dr. Michael Baden, a renowned forensic pathologist, reviewed the autopsy report and explained that the bacterial infection could have been treated with penicillin, while the viral infection might have been addressed with fluids and antibodies. Baden further stated that Avery’s death was preventable, had the pneumonia been properly treated.
Avery Koonce, a standout track athlete from Texas, had been showing symptoms such as a chronic cough, fever, and difficulty breathing in the days leading up to her death. Despite the seriousness of her condition, it is suggested that she may not have sought treatment, not realizing the severity of her illness.
Koonce was a member of the Air Force Academy’s Class of 2028 and part of the school’s track and field team. Her parents, Eric and Kelly Koonce, expressed their deep sorrow, calling their daughter “an incredible bright light in this broken world” and stating that their lives would forever be diminished by her absence.
The Air Force Academy and Koonce’s family have not provided additional comments on the tragic event.
