Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley is currently under scrutiny following the release of bodycam footage showing her interaction with police during a traffic stop. Just days prior to this incident, Doorley sent an internal email to her colleagues that has been characterized as particularly harsh.

In the email, which was obtained by media, Doorley commended her team for their hard work but quickly shifted to a more critical tone. She described some of her staff as “a disaster, plain and simple,” expressing frustration over what she perceived as their lack of commitment to their duties. The email emphasized her dissatisfaction with how certain cases were being handled and indicated a plan to meet individually with members of her team to review their caseloads.

This email provides a glimpse into the internal dynamics of the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office under Doorley’s leadership. It also sets the stage for the subsequent incident captured on bodycam, which further complicates the public’s perception of her conduct and leadership.

The bodycam footage revealed Doorley engaging in a contentious exchange with a police officer after she was pulled over for speeding. Despite being clocked at 55 mph in a 35 mph zone, Doorley initially refused to stop and later resisted the officer’s instructions during the stop near her home. During the exchange, she was dismissive of the officer’s explanations and at one point, called the Webster Police Chief to intervene, asking the officers to leave her alone.

The situation has escalated to a point where the Rochester City Council has requested an investigation into Doorley’s conduct by the Attorney General. This request underscores the concerns regarding her fitness to continue serving in her role, given the standards of ethics, accountability, and respect for the law that her position requires.

This incident, coupled with her internal communications, paints a picture of a district attorney facing significant professional and public relations challenges. The community and her colleagues are left to reconcile her public persona and her private interactions, both of which are now under intense scrutiny.
