Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has joined the list of lawmakers who want to look into claims that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas took illegal gifts while in office.
Sanders praised Whitehouse for starting the investigation the same day, saying he was “on the right track.” He is a Democrat from Rhode Island.
I think it’s great that Senator Whitehouse is making progress. In contrast to other judges and politicians, the Supreme Court does not have a written code of ethics… Sanders said on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki, “Some of what we’re reading about [Justice] Thomas is really shocking, and I think it should be looked into.”
If Psaki asked, “Should the DOJ investigate Thomas?” he would tell her, “Yes.” Sanders didn’t say that Thomas should be fired, but he did say that his acts should be looked into first.
I think there should be a probe before the articles of impeachment are sent in. Sanders was clear that the Justice Department should pay attention to this.
In response to the accusations against Thomas, the Senate has set up a meeting on Monday to talk about the ethics of the Supreme Court.
In his defense, Thomas says, “I asked my colleagues and other judges for advice, and they told me that this kind of personal hospitality from close personal friends who don’t have business before the court didn’t have to be reported.” Harlan Crow is a wealthy real estate developer from Dallas who gives a lot of money to the Republican Party.
People say that Thomas and Crow have a secret real estate deal, but Thomas hasn’t said anything about it yet.
