Biden Boasts Higher Wages, Gets Twitter Fact-Checked

As President Joe Biden’s administration seeks to highlight positive economic indicators and promote its economic policies, an unexpected clash unfolded on Twitter between the president and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Musk’s Twitter account added a fact-check note to Biden’s Sunday tweet about improving real wages, challenging the accuracy of the president’s claim. The ensuing debate over real wage data and economic realities further intensified the ongoing discourse surrounding “Bidenomics.”

President Biden’s tweet asserted that real wages for average American workers were now higher than pre-pandemic levels, attributing it to the success of his economic approach. However, Twitter users quickly pointed out data suggesting that real wages, adjusted for inflation, were higher at the end of March 2020 compared to the present. Republicans seized on this discrepancy to argue that Biden is out of touch with the economic challenges faced by ordinary Americans. Meanwhile, Biden’s allies contended that the appropriate comparison should be made a month earlier when real wages were indeed lower.

This dispute emerged shortly after the release of the June Consumer Price Index, which indicated a decrease in inflation to three percent. Administration officials saw this as an opportunity to present a positive narrative about the economy, after months of concerns over rising inflation and gas prices. Biden’s tweet about real wages was intended to reinforce the message of successful economic policies, coined as “Bidenomics.”

The fact-check note added by Twitter’s Community Notes acknowledged a factual error in Biden’s claim regarding real wages. It highlighted the inflation-adjusted real wage figures from March 15, 2020, to July 16, 2023, which showed a decline in real wages. Critics pointed to the end of March data as evidence that real wages were higher before the pandemic. However, supporters of the president argued that the National Bureau of Economic Research indicated that March 2020 represented a business cycle peak, making it an appropriate starting point for pre-pandemic comparisons.

Biden’s Economic Defense and Republican Criticism:
After being on the defensive for two years, President Biden has recently been emphasizing the positive impact of his policies on the labor market and the overall economy. Despite his efforts, Republicans perceive vulnerabilities in Biden’s economic approach and aim to leverage them for the upcoming elections. A recent poll revealed that a significant percentage of Americans believe they are worse off since Biden assumed office. However, the president remains committed to highlighting the successes of his economic agenda and addressing concerns over rising costs for families.

The clash between President Biden and Elon Musk on Twitter regarding real wages underscores the ongoing debate surrounding economic policies and their impact on the American public. As the Biden administration seeks to promote its economic agenda and address concerns, fact-checking and differing interpretations of economic data are likely to continue shaping the discourse around “Bidenomics” in the months to come.
