President Joe Biden, during a press conference at the White Elephant Hotel in Nantucket on Friday, emphasized the role of intensive American diplomatic efforts in the ongoing hostage release process. He highlighted that this was just the beginning, as several U.S. citizens, including two women and a young child named Abigail Mor Edan, are still held captive. These individuals are believed to be among those abducted in a violent attack by Hamas on October 7.

While spending Thanksgiving with his family at a luxurious waterfront property on Nantucket Island, Biden expressed uncertainty about the timing of the Americans’ release. He acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating that the exact identities and number of hostages to be released were still unclear. However, he remained hopeful for their imminent release.

Biden informed the nation of the release of several hostages, including 13 Israelis, 10 Thai nationals, and a Filipino citizen, describing it as the commencement of a larger process. He projected that more releases would follow in the subsequent days, ultimately reuniting dozens of hostages with their families. Notably, the plight of the American hostages, particularly the young Edan on her fourth birthday, was a point of significant concern.

The President also admitted the lack of information about the condition of the American hostages. The White House had earlier confirmed that no U.S. citizens were among the first group released by Hamas. Biden had been regularly updated by his national security team on the situation.

Biden commended the successful start to the implementation of the hostage release deal, noting the diverse group of individuals involved, including elderly women and young mothers with children. He empathized with the traumatic experiences of the hostages and the long path to recovery ahead, symbolized by the teddy bears awaiting the young children at the hospital.

The President also reflected on the youngest known U.S. citizen held by Hamas, Abigail Mor Edan, whose fourth birthday coincided with his address. Her great-aunt, Liz Hirsh Naftali, expressed deep emotional turmoil over the situation on CNN, emphasizing the human impact of such incidents beyond political and diplomatic dimensions. She stressed the importance of seeing tangible results, underscoring the gravity of the circumstances involving innocent lives, including children.

This situation continues to unfold, with the world watching and hoping for the safe return of all hostages.
