President Joe Biden has introduced rigorous new emissions regulations pertaining to trucks and buses, signifying a substantial advancement in the transition towards electric vehicles under his administration. The newly established standards, which pertain to a diverse range of heavy vehicles such as cement mixers, refuse trucks, recreational vehicles (RVs), ambulances, and school buses, were comprehensively described by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The regulation requires that by 2032, a minimum of 25% of long-haul trucks and 40% of medium-sized trucks (including landscaping vehicles and cargo trucks) must be classified as non-polluting.
Oppositional factions contend that these regulations will introduce complexities into business operations and have a negative impact on consumers. They contend that the emission reduction targets set by the EPA are technologically unachievable, specifically with regard to the electrification of the transportation sector, which is vital to the movement of freight in the United States. They assert that this regulation creates an environment conducive to potential challenges in the supply chain through the increase in transportation expenses.
On the contrary, these regulations are being lauded by the Biden administration and the EPA as a crucial stride towards addressing climate change and enhancing public health. It is anticipated that the new regulations, which will be implemented for vehicle models produced after 2027, will effectively eradicate one billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Automobile manufacturers will be granted autonomy in determining the means by which they adhere to these environmentally friendly criteria, incorporating alternatives such as hydrogen fuel cells and zero-emission batteries.
As stated by EPA Administrator Michael Regan, the enforcement of these standards is anticipated to decrease gasoline consumption by over 13 million tanker trucks over the course of the following decade. These standards are considered “the most stringent national greenhouse gas standards for heavy-duty vehicles in history.” These measures are an extension of a more extensive approach adopted by the Biden administration to accelerate the shift towards electric vehicles in the automotive industry. This strategy is further supported by revised emission standards for domestic automobiles and endeavors to enhance electric vehicle sales, manufacturing, and charging infrastructure.
Vice President Biden’s dedication to mitigating the climate crisis, which disproportionately affects marginalized communities residing in close proximity to vehicle freight routes, is evident in this ambitious environmental policy. Given that approximately 72 million Americans, frequently from low-income households or communities of color, reside in close proximity to these routes, the administration’s action is also regarded as a stride toward environmental justice. The new standards have garnered praise from the American Lung Association and other public health advocates due to their potential to substantially enhance air quality and mitigate pollution that contributes to climate change.
