Biden Sends New “Unity” Message to Americans on Thanksgiving

During the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, President Joe Biden, alongside First Lady Jill Biden, made an impromptu call to NBC News’s Al Roker, advocating for unity among Americans despite political differences. The president’s message, focusing on collaboration to tackle national challenges, comes at a time when public sentiment towards politics is notably weary.

President Biden emphasized the necessity of coming together as a nation. “On this Thanksgiving, Al, we have to come together. We can have different political views, but we share a common belief in our nation’s greatness. Let’s work on solving our problems collectively and reduce the bitterness,” Biden remarked. He further stressed the importance of decency in public discourse, aligning with the sentiments of a significant portion of the American populace.

Contrasting with Biden’s optimistic outlook, recent polling indicates a less favorable view of the political landscape. A Pew Research study reveals a significant decline in public trust towards key governmental and political entities. A substantial portion of Americans express feelings of exhaustion and anger regarding politics, with 65% feeling drained and 55% feeling enraged by the current political climate.

Discontent is also apparent regarding the options for the 2024 Presidential election, as 63% of Americans express dissatisfaction with the current pool of candidates. Both major political parties, Republicans and Democrats, face unfavorable perceptions from nearly 30% of the electorate.

The Biden family celebrated Thanksgiving at David Rubenstein’s residence, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm. During the holiday, President Biden engaged in traditional activities, such as calling military units across various branches and visiting the Nantucket Fire Department to distribute pies. The family also participated in the annual “polar bear plunge” in Nantucket’s chilly waters, a moment captured in photographs shared by Biden’s eldest granddaughter.

In addition to the Thanksgiving festivities, President Biden is closely monitoring the evolving Israel-Hamas situation. An agreement has been reached for a ceasefire starting at midnight EST, with a planned exchange of hostages at approximately 9 a.m. This development is part of ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.
