On Monday, President Joe Biden delivered the clearest sign yet that he intends to run for reelection, but he said he wasn’t “prepared to announce it yet.”
In an interview with Al Roker of the Today Show, Biden, 80, said he is “planning” on a re-election candidacy with Jill Biden at his side before the traditional White House Easter Egg Roll.
Despite doubts about his health and age, the president has often stated his intention to run again in 2024. However, he has yet to publicly announce his candidacy.
Roker said, “Mr. President, I was just wondering if you’ll be attending Easter egg rolls after 2024.”
Three or four additional Easter egg rolls are in the works for me. Perhaps five, Biden suggested. Perhaps six,” they said. Holy crap. I have no idea.
Roker inquired as to whether he intended to make a bid for office in 2024.
‘I’ll either be the one rolling the egg or the man pushing them out,’ Biden said.
His exact words were, “I plan on running, Al, but we’re not ready to announce it yet.”
Despite being the oldest president ever, Biden passed his yearly medical earlier this year and was given a clean bill of health to serve.
Biden’s re-election announcement had been expected to come in February, following his State of the Union speech. Initially, April was discussed as a possible date.
His busy schedule doesn’t leave any room for an announcement anytime soon. On Tuesday, the president will go for Ireland to commemorate the Good Friday Agreement’s silver anniversary and to pay homage to his family’s homeland.
He and Jill Biden will have their second state dinner at the end of the month.
There is no telling why or when he will make an announcement.
According to the average of polls conducted by RealClearPolitics, Biden has an approval rating of 44%.
Although Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have declared their intentions to run against him in the primary, they haven’t attracted much of a following.
