Biden Warns of Sanctions in Reaction to Israeli Settler Attacks in West Bank

In a recent op-ed for the Washington Post, President Joe Biden expressed his vision for addressing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, particularly focusing on the situation between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. President Biden advocated for the reunification of Gaza and the West Bank under a single governance, ideally the Palestinian Authority, as part of a broader pursuit of a two-state solution.

Amidst this framework, President Biden specifically addressed the issue of violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank. He emphasized his direct discussions with Israeli leaders, insisting on the cessation of extremist violence against Palestinians in the area. Furthermore, Biden revealed that the U.S. is ready to impose measures such as visa bans on those identified as extremists responsible for civilian attacks in the West Bank.

The President also tackled the subject of a ceasefire, expressing skepticism about its effectiveness. He argued that a ceasefire could inadvertently provide Hamas, which he described as adhering to an ideology of destruction, with opportunities to replenish its arsenal and regroup, ultimately harming civilians in the long-term.

This stance comes amidst increasing calls within the Democratic Party, including from Congress members like Rep. Becca Balint (D-VT), for a ceasefire. In his piece, Biden balanced his support for Israel’s right to self-defense with an affirmation of the Palestinian people’s entitlement to their own state and a future independent of Hamas control. The President’s position reflects a nuanced approach to a complex geopolitical issue, aiming to balance the diverse interests and concerns of the parties involved.
