Marcia Fudge, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), has announced her decision to step down from her role, marking her last day in office as March 22. This announcement places Fudge as the second original Cabinet member to leave the Biden administration, following the departure of Labor Secretary Marty Walsh last year.

During her tenure, Fudge has been recognized for her commitment to addressing issues of economic opportunity and housing affordability. President Joe Biden, in a statement, lauded her efforts to make the American housing system more inclusive and accessible to all citizens, highlighting her contributions toward building generational wealth through homeownership, reducing rental costs, and promoting fairness for renters. Biden credited Fudge with leading initiatives that have significantly impacted housing affordability and availability, including the largest proposed investment in affordable housing in U.S. history and efforts to combat racial discrimination in housing practices.

Fudge, aged 71, has had a distinguished career in public service, serving as a Democratic representative for Ohio’s 11th Congressional District, which encompasses Cleveland, from 2008 to 2021. She also made history as the first female and first African American mayor of Warrensville Heights, Ohio, and worked in the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office as the director of Budget and Finance.

Reflecting on her departure, Fudge expressed a desire to return to private life and focus on spending time with her family, including her mother, who is nearing her 93rd birthday. She emphasized the importance of affordable housing as a bipartisan concern that transcends political divisions, describing it as an American issue that demands attention from both Democrats and Republicans alike.

As the Biden administration prepares for Fudge’s departure, her legacy at HUD and her broader impact on public policy and community welfare will continue to be felt by many Americans seeking equitable access to housing and economic opportunity.
