Donald Trump’s path back to the Oval Office lacks robust support from his former Cabinet. Of the 44 officials contacted, only four publicly endorsed his 2024 reelection bid.
Many oppose Trump’s nomination entirely, some working actively against it, while several gave no comment.
Former Attorney General Bill Barr stated he won’t back Trump under any circumstances, even vowing to vote against him in a hypothetical rematch with President Biden. Ex-Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney quipped Trump may be the one Republican who could lose to Biden again.
The meager list of endorsers includes Matthew Whitaker, Mark Meadows, Russell Vought and Richard Grenell. Meanwhile, former colleagues like Mike Pence and Nikki Haley are primary challengers. Ex-Intelligence Director Dan Coats backs Pence.
Notable undeclared officials include Mike Pompeo, Mark Esper, John Kelly and others. Mulvaney aims squarely to block Trump’s nomination, believing he’s the surest loser come November.
Of course, a few remain firmly aboard the Trump train. Vought trusts him to take on the Deep State, while Grenell tweeted “Trump 2024.” A spokesperson confirmed Meadows’ full backing.
Ben Carson praised Trump’s potential without officially endorsing. But among the crowded field of primary opponents, none come close to toppling Trump’s commanding 50% lead in polls. For now, the nomination appears his to lose.
Trump’s reelection faces a rocky road without his Cabinet’s resounding support. But his base remains devoted, hoping his populist appeal can overcome resistance from the GOP establishment.
