Bill Maher, a comedian and television personality, stated on his show that President Joe Biden, while capable of doing his job, should drop out of the presidential race. Maher, who is 67 years old, argued that Biden, who is 80 years old, is the “only Democrat who can lose to Trump.” He characterized former President Donald Trump as an “insane ball of white hot anger” who is perceived differently from Biden, despite their four-year age difference.
Maher expressed concern that Biden’s age could be a liability in the 2024 election, stating, “You can be a national treasure and still be too old for the job.” He suggested that if he were on a plane and the pilot announced, “this is your captain, Buzz Aldrin,” he would get off the plane.
While Maher acknowledged that Biden has made generally good decisions during his presidency, he argued that Biden should limit his tenure to one term and not run for re-election. Maher also criticized ageism in American politics and highlighted the challenges of campaigning and debates for older candidates.
Despite concerns about Biden’s age, Maher pointed out that no Democrat has emerged as a clear alternative to him in the 2024 presidential race, and a recent poll indicated that a majority of Democrats couldn’t name an alternative candidate.
