Iconic musician Billy Joel has announced the cancellation of all scheduled tour dates through July 2026 following a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare and serious brain condition.
The 76-year-old artist, known for decades of hit songs and high-energy performances, shared that the decision comes after medical experts advised him to focus on his health. NPH causes fluid buildup in the brain, leading to symptoms such as difficulty walking, memory problems, and impaired coordination—some of which began to intensify during his recent shows.
Joel expressed his deep regret over the cancellations and thanked fans for their support and understanding. He is currently undergoing physical therapy and will be taking time away from the stage to recover.
The affected tour included 17 stops across North America and the UK, many of them highly anticipated performances with artists like Sting, Rod Stewart, and Stevie Nicks. Refunds for all ticket holders will be processed automatically.
Joel recently wrapped up a historic 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden, performing his 150th consecutive sold-out show in July 2024. While this diagnosis marks a challenging chapter, the legendary performer remains hopeful about returning to live music when his health allows.
Normal pressure hydrocephalus most commonly affects older adults and is often mistaken for other neurological conditions. With proper treatment, which can involve surgical intervention to drain excess fluid, patients can experience significant recovery.
