A massive explosion ripped through the Accurate Energetic Systems facility in rural Tennessee Friday, reducing one of its buildings to rubble and leaving multiple people dead.

Authorities report at least 18 individuals remain unaccounted for and are presumed deceased. Rescue efforts have shifted to recovery operations, as investigators now focus on identifying victims and uncovering the blast’s cause.

More than 300 emergency personnel from local, state, and federal agencies are combing the site. Officials say the volatile environment—due to remaining explosives—has slowed and complicated search efforts.

The company, which manufactures munitions and explosive materials, has suspended operations. No firm conclusion has emerged on whether the blast was accidental or intentional; federal agencies including the ATF and FBI have joined the probe.

The small community surrounding the site is reeling, as many of the missing and deceased were well-known locally. Officials have urged residents to stay clear of the area while work continues.
