Secretary of State Antony Blinken clarified the situation regarding evacuating foreign nationals from the Gaza Strip during an interview with Randa Abul Azm of Al-Arabiya. When asked about the challenges of removing civilians from Gaza and delivering humanitarian aid, Blinken emphasized that it was not Israel preventing foreign nationals from leaving. Instead, he pointed out that the difficulties arose because Hamas was disrupting these efforts. He also noted that Egypt was prepared to assist with evacuations and facilitate the delivery of aid to Gaza.
Blinken went further, accusing Hamas of using civilians as human shields by locating their leaders, command centers, and weapons in residential areas, schools, and hospitals. He described these actions as disgraceful.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has raised concerns about a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. There are urgent calls for humanitarian access as the cumulative casualties on both sides and the displacement of civilians continue to grow. Israel issued an evacuation warning to northern Gaza residents, emphasizing the importance of minimizing civilian casualties during their planned ground offensive. The United States has urged Israel to adhere to the rules of war. President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt called for access through Rafah while expressing concerns about the potential impact on the Palestinian cause.
Efforts are ongoing to address the evolving situation in Gaza and provide essential humanitarian assistance.
