The U.S. Department of Justice has transferred multiple former federal death-row inmates—whose sentences were commuted by Joe Biden in December 2024—to the highest-security federal prison. The transfers to ADX Florence in Colorado come under the leadership of Pam Bondi as Attorney General.
The inmates were among 37 individuals whose death sentences were converted to life imprisonment without parole. The DOJ said the move is needed because of the “egregious crimes” they committed and the ongoing security risk they present. The agency confirmed that 8–10 of the condemned prisoners have already been relocated and all are expected to be moved by early next year.
Bondi issued a memo shortly after taking office directing the Bureau of Prisons to review confinement conditions for the commuted inmates and ensure they are consistent with their history and threat level. The move highlights a reversal of the previous administration’s clemency push for federal death-row inmates and reflects a tougher stance on violent offenders.
