Rep. Byron Donalds, a Republican from Florida, responded to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s comments made during an MSNBC interview with Mehdi Hasan on Sunday. Donalds made his remarks on “The Story” with Martha MacCallum on Fox. He highlighted his 20 years of experience in the financial industry before entering Congress and emphasized his four years in the Florida legislature, where he chaired two committees. Donalds also noted his work with various members of Congress to pass significant legislation during his time in the House.

Donalds countered Ocasio-Cortez’s comments, stating that she doesn’t fully understand his background and achievements. He concluded by suggesting that Democrats should be cautious about underestimating him and his potential as Speaker of the House.

Ocasio-Cortez had criticized Donalds, claiming he had only served one term in the House and had submitted “false evidence” during a Biden impeachment hearing. She implied that experience and knowledge of the legislative process were essential qualifications for running the U.S. House of Representatives.

Ocasio-Cortez’s reference to falsified evidence pertained to a screenshot of text messages between Hunter Biden and President Biden’s brother, James Biden, which was presented during an impeachment hearing to argue that the President benefited from his family’s foreign business dealings.

The Speaker of the House race in the GOP remains competitive, with nine candidates officially running to replace former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. However, the party faces questions about the duration of the debate and its potential impact on voter support in the 2024 elections. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio failed to secure enough votes during recent floor-wide votes, necessitating further discussions within the party. Interim Speaker Rep. Patrick McHenry announced plans for another forum and a floor vote in the coming days, as the race for the speakership remains uncertain.
