In a tragic incident Monday night, 25-year-old Officer Lauren Craven of the La Mesa Police Department was killed while rendering aid following a multi-vehicle collision on eastbound Interstate 8 near Fairmount Avenue.
While returning to La Mesa from San Diego Central Jail, she stopped after spotting the wreck and stepped out of her patrol car to assist other motorists when a passing vehicle struck her. Life-saving efforts by the California Highway Patrol were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officer Craven had joined the department in February 2024 and was assigned to the Patrol Division. Her department released a statement honoring her commitment to public safety and self-less action in her final moments.
The investigation is being handled by the California Highway Patrol, which is examining the contributing factors, including any impairment or roadway conditions, and has arrested a driver on suspicion of DUI in connection with the incident.
This loss highlights the risks faced by law-enforcement officers who pause their patrols to assist during perilous roadside incidents and underscores the urgency of highway-safety protocols to protect first responders.
