In an innovative approach to addressing racial issues, the Martinez Unified School District (MUSD) near Berkeley, California, has unveiled a groundbreaking program designed to develop over a hundred student leaders in the principles of Critical Race Theory (CRT). This initiative, set to unfold over the next three years with a budget exceeding $100,000, marks a significant stride in the district’s efforts toward racial equity and education.
At the helm of this project is Dr. Lori Watson of Race Work, an Oakland-based consultancy firm with a focus on dismantling systemic racism. Dr. Watson’s latest venture, the Student Leaders’ Anti-Racist Movement (SLAM), aspires to transform students into proactive agents of change, fostering an environment where young individuals lead the charge against racial inequities.
Distinctively, SLAM is geared toward students’ active participation, a departure from traditional programs that target educators or school administrators. The goal is to heighten students’ awareness of racial dynamics and equip them with the necessary strategies to confront and challenge racial injustices within their schools and the broader community. Race Work emphasizes that adult participation should complement the students’ efforts, positioning them as supportive allies in the movement.
The adoption of SLAM by the Martinez school district was formalized after the school board’s unanimous vote on September 25th, following a detailed presentation of the initiative as part of the district’s broader diversity, equity, and inclusion plans. The program’s financial breakdown reveals an allocation of $37,500 for the first year, with subsequent years budgeted slightly lower, amounting to a cumulative investment of $108,750.
Designed to be rolled out in three phases—learning, articulating, and acting—the program seeks to cultivate the students’ abilities to navigate and lead anti-racist efforts that resonate with their personal values and community needs. With the guidance of SLAM and the support of school administrators, students are expected to emerge as empowered leaders in the fight against racism.
The efficacy of the program will be gauged after the first year, determining its potential continuation. Students across two high schools, 60 from each, will have the opportunity to participate in this ambitious program. Additionally, participating schools can opt for extra coaching or consultations at a specialized rate.
Student testimonials highlight the profound influence of SLAM, with some participants declaring it to be among the most pivotal learning experiences of their lives. Such reflections indicate the transformative potential of Dr. Watson’s methods, despite facing criticism over her controversial public statements regarding race relations.
The MUSD’s prior engagements with Race Work include contracts awarded in 2020 and 2021, totaling $41,000. Race Work has also extended its reach to other California school districts, securing significant contracts and fueling the expansion of CRT-based educational initiatives. As the SLAM program launches, it ignites a spirited conversation about the role of academia in confronting and reshaping the narrative around race and equity.
