In a recent interview, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mélanie Joly, disclosed that Canada has been formulating a contingency plan for potential outcomes of the upcoming American presidential election. Joly, who has risen in Canadian politics and has been identified as a possible future leader, stated that her country is considering various scenarios, particularly in the event that the United States takes a far-right, authoritarian shift after the election.

Joly emphasized that Canada is preparing to respond to any election outcome by collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders, including mayors, provincial premiers, the business community, and unions. Her intention is to ensure that Canada is well-prepared regardless of the results of the American election.

Drawing parallels to the Trump administration, Joly mentioned that her government has experience dealing with changes in the U.S. political landscape, especially regarding trade policies during former President Donald Trump’s tenure.

In the interview, Joly also addressed concerns about the growth of far-right ideologies in both the United States and Europe. She expressed her commitment to preventing the radicalization of Canadian politics, particularly within the Conservative Party, while acknowledging the importance of safeguarding democracy against such trends.

This isn’t the first time Joly has spoken about potential interference and radicalization. In the past, she voiced concerns about foreign interference in Canadian politics, particularly during the Freedom Convoy protests against vaccine mandates. Joly condemned disinformation campaigns and highlighted the need to address these issues.

Overall, Joly’s remarks indicate that Canada is taking proactive steps to prepare for potential shifts in U.S. politics and to counter the influence of far-right ideologies within its own political landscape.
