During an evening prayer service at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spokane, Washington, a man attacked Rev. David Gaines, the parochial vicar. The incident occurred on February 4, during the second night of the Lourdes Novena for Healing, a series of prayers culminating in the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes.
As the service progressed, the assailant, seated in the front pew, suddenly rushed toward the altar and attempted to strike Rev. Gaines. The priest managed to deflect the initial blow and restrained the attacker until members of the congregation intervened. No injuries were reported among the clergy or attendees.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Joshua Sommers, was arrested by local authorities and charged with assault and trespassing. Investigations revealed that Sommers had an outstanding warrant related to a previous incident involving an attack on a mental health worker and an escape from a facility in 2023.
Following the disturbance, the service resumed, with church leaders offering prayers for the assailant. Rev. Darrin Connall, the cathedral’s rector, expressed gratitude for the swift actions of those who assisted and emphasized the importance of compassion, noting that the individual appeared to be in need of mental health support.
In response to the event, the cathedral has reviewed its security measures and increased the presence of security personnel during services to ensure the safety of its congregation.
The incident has prompted discussions within the community about mental health awareness and the challenges faced by individuals experiencing mental health crises. Church officials have reiterated their commitment to providing a safe space for worship while extending support to those in need.
The cathedral’s leaders have encouraged the faithful to continue participating in the novena and to pray for healing and understanding within the community.
