Authorities have confirmed that 22 year old graduate student Eliotte Heinz died from accidental drowning, bringing clarity to a case that gripped her community after she disappeared while walking home from a bar in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Heinz was last seen around 3:20 a.m. after leaving a downtown establishment near the city’s waterfront. A massive search followed her disappearance, ending three days later when her body was found in the Mississippi River near Brownsville, Minnesota, roughly 10 miles downstream from where she was last seen.
An autopsy revealed no signs of trauma or foul play. Toxicology testing showed a blood alcohol level of 0.193, more than twice Wisconsin’s legal driving limit, while all drug screenings returned negative. Medical examiners concluded the manner of death was accidental drowning, aligning with the evidence gathered throughout the investigation.
The findings close a heartbreaking chapter for Heinz’s family and friends, who described her as a compassionate and driven student preparing for a career in mental health counseling at Viterbo University. Her disappearance prompted days of community searches and widespread concern before the final determination was made.
