Move over, Chicago! Atlanta may be taking your place as the murder-capital of America. While the city’s crime rate has decreased, new data shows that the murder rate exceeds that of Chicago’s!

According to fresh FBI data, there were 11.6 murders per hundred thousand people in Chicago. Compared to Atlanta, in the same time frame, which had 12.3 murders per hundred thousand. And given this new data, there are cries for a new Mayor.

Compared to 2014, the number of homicide victims in Atlanta increased by 1.1 percent in 2015 and by 6.8 percent from half a decade ago.

Here are America’s top 25 murder capitals in 2015, according to FBI crime data:

    1. St. Louis, Missouri
    2. Baltimore, Maryland
    3. Detroit, Michigan
    4. New Orleans, Louisiana
    5. Birmingham, Alabama
    6. Jackson, Mississippi
    7. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
    8. Hartford, Connecticut
    9. Salinas, California
    10. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
    11. Washington, District of Columbia
    12. Kansas City, Missouri
    13. Cincinnati, Ohio
    14. West Palm Beach, Florida
    15. Memphis, Tennessee
    16. San Bernardino, California
    17. Oakland, California
    18. Atlanta, Georgia
    19. Richmond, Virginia
    20. Kansas City, Kansas
    21. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
    22. Dayton, Ohio
    23. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
    24. Chicago, Illinois
    25. North Charleston, South Carolina

    As reported by 11Alive:

ATLANTA — While Atlanta’s crime rate has generally declined over the last decade, the city’s murder rate has risen 32 percent.  And that data shows the city’s murder rate exceeds that of Chicago.

In Atlanta the number of murders bottomed out in 2013, when police reported 84 murders in the city limits.  But murders have climbed since then. In 2016, the city reported 111 murders, a jump of 32 percent.

An 11Alive poll issued this week shows that crime concerns top the concerns of voters planning to choose an new Atlanta mayor in the 2017 election.

“Atlanta should not be tenth in murders.  Chicago is 14,” said state Sen. Vincent Fort, a candidate for mayor.

He says the stats paint a bleak picture of crime in Atlanta.  He pointed out to us FBI data that shows that per one hundred thousand residents – Atlanta’s murder rate is actually higher than Chicago’s.
