Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare and urgent warning at a judicial conference in Charlotte, expressing concern that incendiary rhetoric from politicians threatens the safety of judges. Without naming names, Roberts clearly referenced harsh comments from both President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, stating that when judges are attacked as “part of the problem,” it can incite real-world violence.
Roberts stressed that courts are facing a surge in threats—both verbal and physical—against those simply doing their jobs. He emphasized that such intimidating language endangers not only individual jurists but also undermines the impartiality and credibility central to the judiciary’s role in democracy.
Roberts called on elected leaders from both parties to rethink their public language and guard against discourse that could incite harm or encourage extremist retaliation.
