In a series of interviews on Sunday morning, Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie launched a scathing attack on former President Donald Trump. Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week,” Christie expressed his belief that Trump would participate in the first Republican primary debate because he wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to counter Christie’s criticism directly.
Christie pointed out that if Trump wants to secure the nomination, he must defend his record, which, according to Christie, falls short of Republican expectations. He highlighted Trump’s failure to repeal and replace Obamacare, despite having a Republican-controlled Congress, and his inability to balance the budget, resulting in a $6 trillion increase in the national debt. Additionally, Christie criticized Trump’s progress on building the wall at the US-Mexico border, highlighting that only 47 miles of new wall were constructed during his presidency.
The former governor asserted that his path to winning the primary lies in confronting the former president head-on, as he believes there is no alternative lane to pursue. Christie later appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Jake Tapper, where he continued his strong criticism of Trump.
When Tapper asked Christie about Trump’s remark that he was being indicted for his supporters, Christie condemned the former president as a “liar and a coward.” He argued that Trump’s indictment was a consequence of his own conduct, specifically referring to the retention of classified national secrets after being asked to return them following his departure from the White House. Christie emphasized that Trump’s indictment resulted from his outrageous behavior, and he should face trial before the 2024 election to provide voters with more information.
Christie’s interviews showcased his firm stance against Trump and his determination to challenge the former president’s record and conduct. As the Republican primary approaches, the clash between the two figures will undoubtedly shape the dynamics of the race.
