Evergreen, Colorado — A quiet afternoon at Evergreen High School turned to chaos when gunfire erupted just after noon, leaving multiple students wounded and a community reeling.
Authorities say the suspected gunman, a male student at the school, carried out the attack using a handgun, firing both outside the building and inside its hallways before turning the weapon on himself. The swift response from law enforcement brought the situation under control within minutes, preventing what officials say could have been an even greater tragedy.
Two students were struck by bullets during the attack. One remains in critical condition at CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, while the other is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The alleged shooter also survived his self-inflicted wound and is currently under medical care, though police have not yet disclosed his identity.
Parents rushed to the campus as word spread, while students sheltered in classrooms during the lockdown. Emotional reunions followed as authorities began releasing students to their families once the campus was secured.
Governor Jared Polis expressed deep concern, stating that his office is closely monitoring developments and pledging full support to local law enforcement and school officials. Investigators are now piecing together the events leading up to the shooting, including any possible motive, while the school community grapples with the trauma of violence in a place meant to be safe for learning.
The Evergreen High School campus remains closed as authorities conduct their investigation, and grief counselors have been made available to students and staff in the wake of the incident.
