House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has called for answers from Special Counsel Robert Hur regarding the classified documents retained by President Biden and their potential connection to his family’s foreign business dealings. Comer is leading an investigation into the Biden family’s foreign business activities as part of the House impeachment inquiry and the alleged mishandling of classified documents.
Comer has expressed concern about whether President Biden kept sensitive documents related to specific countries with ties to the Biden family’s foreign business. He highlighted that the Biden family and their business associates received significant payments from individuals and companies in China, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Romania, and other countries. These payments amounted to over $24 million between 2014 and 2019, as the family marketed Joe Biden as “the brand” worldwide.
Comer raised questions about whether any classified documents retained by President Biden were related to these countries. He also inquired about the White House or Biden’s personal attorneys potentially imposing limitations or scoping restrictions during the special counsel’s interview, hindering inquiries into foreign payments.
The chairman requested a secured location for document review and the provision of information without redactions, including any limitations imposed during the interview. Comer also sought a list of countries, individuals, and documents with classified markings retrieved from various locations, including the Penn Biden Center and Biden’s residence.
Comer asked whether Hur was allowed to inquire about evidence from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware and information from IRS whistleblowers concerning the Biden family’s business dealings. Additionally, he requested copies of reports and notes following the interview with President Biden and any interview with former White House counsel Dana Remus.
This inquiry follows President Biden’s interview with Special Counsel Robert Hur, conducted over two days earlier this month. The investigation relates to classified documents discovered at the Penn Biden Center and President Biden’s Wilmington home. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Hur as special counsel to investigate the matter. The House Oversight Committee continues its investigation into potential improprieties related to the Biden family’s foreign dealings.
