The son of President Biden, Hunter Biden, has indicated that he is willing to take a deposition with the impeachment team, and House Republicans are preparing to resend a subpoena to him. Leading the charge are House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), who made the decision as debates about Biden’s deposition have heated up again.
Comer and Jordan stated in a letter to Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, that they would be happy to issue a fresh subpoena in order to get Biden’s participation in their continuing inquiry. Hunter Biden was the subject of an earlier subpoena for a private deposition, which he failed to comply with, leading to this ruling.
In addition, the House Republicans are considering a resolution to declare Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for dodging the first subpoena. Comer has, however, hinted that if Biden and his legal team cooperate and reach a consensus on a new date for the deposition, this decision may be postponed.
In response to the committee chairs, Lowell claimed that the original subpoena was void since it was issued prior to the House’s formal authorization of its investigation into Lowell’s impeachment. Now that the investigation has official authorization, he guaranteed that Hunter Biden would abide by a fresh subpoena.
Hunter Biden had earlier offered to attend a public hearing; the GOP committee leaders said they would review his offer during a private meeting. In spite of this, Biden made unannounced trips to the U.S. Capitol last week while the House Oversight Committee was moving forward with its contempt resolution on the morning of his scheduled deposition. He voiced his complaints about the attacks on his family and the breach of his privacy during these appearances, as well as his criticism of the Republican investigation.
This development represents the most recent phase of the Republican-led probe into the incident and the ongoing examination of Hunter Biden’s conduct. House Republicans are committed to securing Biden’s involvement in the investigation as it develops.
