A legal action has been filed by The Daily Wire against the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on the grounds that it neglected to provide public information requests pertaining to the Community Relations Service (CRS). The CRS, a federal agency operating under the DOJ, has faced allegations of supporting left-leaning causes despite purporting to provide impartial mediation services for disputes involving religion, disability, ethnicity, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or national origin.
The CRS’s intervention in a Virginia county school board’s decision to adopt the transgender policies of Republican governor Glenn Youngkin sparked a heightened controversy. The CRS described the apprehension of a leftist activist who sought to obstruct the policy’s implementation as “community tensions” that prompted its intervention. Governor Youngkin’s spokesperson is among those who have characterized the CRS as a political instrument of the Democratic Party.
America First Legal represented The Daily Wire in its filing of a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. The legal action aims to enforce an injunction against the DOJ, requiring the disclosure of records that were requested in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). These requests for information regarding CRS communications and operations were submitted in August and October; however, the DOJ failed to respond to them.

It follows prior litigation filed against the Biden administration, including one that the Supreme Court suspended by a vote of 6-3 and challenged a mandate for businesses to enforce COVID-19 vaccinations.
