Authorities in Texas have identified the gunman in this week’s deadly attack on a Dallas Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility as Joshua Jahn, 29, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound moments after opening fire.

The incident unfolded when Jahn positioned himself on a rooftop overlooking the federal complex and began firing at a transport van arriving at the facility. Inside were several detainees. Gunfire ripped through the vehicle, killing one man and critically injuring two others before security officers responded. No ICE employees were struck in the barrage.

Investigators at the scene recovered multiple shell casings, some of which were inscribed with the words “ANTI-ICE,” leading officials to conclude the shooting was politically motivated. Homeland Security officials described the act as a “targeted assault” on the immigration system, while also confirming that the victims were detainees under ICE custody. Their names have since been released: 33-year-old Luis Hernandez, who was killed instantly, and two others who remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Law enforcement is now piecing together Jahn’s background. Early findings suggest he acted alone, though agents are probing his social media activity and any prior affiliations to anti-government or anti-immigration groups. Dallas police said Jahn had no serious criminal record but had expressed anti-ICE sentiments online.

The attack sent shockwaves through the immigrant community and reignited debate over security at federal facilities. Officials are now reviewing security protocols and increasing patrols around ICE offices nationwide. Homeland Security has vowed to continue its investigation into Jahn’s motives while ensuring that detainees and staff remain protected.

The tragedy underscores the volatile environment surrounding immigration enforcement in the U.S., where passions on both sides of the debate have sometimes spilled into violent acts. For the families of the victims, the deadly assault has brought grief and uncertainty as authorities work to stabilize the survivors and uncover the full story behind Jahn’s actions.
