Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin has issued a firm ultimatum to Vice Chair David Hogg, warning that he must either step away from his leadership role or end his efforts to fund primary challenges against sitting Democratic incumbents.
Hogg, through his group Leaders We Deserve, has pledged $20 million to support progressive candidates running against established Democrats in safely held districts. His campaign aims to refresh the party’s leadership with younger, more progressive voices.
Martin stressed that DNC officers are expected to remain neutral during primary races to maintain party integrity, arguing that Hogg’s dual role poses a direct conflict of interest.
Hogg defended his actions, saying he is working within party rules and that supporting new leaders is crucial to energizing the Democratic base, particularly younger voters who are demanding change.
The DNC will vote in August on a proposed rule that would formally require officers to stay neutral during primaries. If adopted, Hogg would face a choice between continuing his leadership at the DNC or stepping down to pursue his advocacy work independently.
The clash highlights a deeper tension within the Democratic Party as it wrestles with the balance between preserving party unity and embracing a new generation of leadership.
