In a recent appearance on MSNBC’s Velshi, Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) addressed the surge in southern border crossings, shifting focus away from President Joe Biden and onto former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. Crockett, representing a border state that has apprehended around 485,700 illegal immigrants since March 2021, according to Governor Greg Abbott’s office, emphasized Trump’s controversial stance on immigration.
Crockett specifically highlighted Trump’s push for a Muslim ban, challenging those critical of Biden’s immigration policies to reconsider their stance in light of Trump’s actions. “We should be more concerned about a leader who sought to implement a ban on Muslims,” Crockett argued.
Despite a slight decrease in border crossings in October, with almost 241,000 attempts following September’s record of nearly 270,000, the issue remains a focal point of national debate. Since Biden’s tenure began, over 10 million undocumented immigrants have reportedly entered the U.S., marking a significant increase.
In Texas, law enforcement’s response to the border situation has led to over 36,000 criminal arrests, with the majority being felony charges. Additionally, significant quantities of fentanyl, amounting to 449 million lethal doses, have been intercepted by state authorities.
Acknowledging public frustration over perceived federal inaction, Crockett said, “Cities are feeling overwhelmed, and this is a problem that extends beyond local governance.”
Crockett also referenced Rep. George Santos’s (R-NY) criticism of Congress’s effectiveness, specifically its failure to pass impactful legislation, including immigration reform. “If there’s a genuine desire to address immigration issues, we should see concrete legislative action,” she noted.
The debate extends to Texas’s Republican representatives, who have proposed a new border security bill. However, disagreements with Senate Republicans and Biden, particularly over foreign aid allocations to Ukraine and Israel, have stalled progress.
In the House, a bill to reduce Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s salary due to his handling of the immigration influx has passed but faces challenges in the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority. Moreover, there are ongoing efforts within the House to impeach Mayorkas.
Representative Crockett’s remarks come at a time when immigration remains a contentious and polarizing issue, with both parties seeking a viable path forward amid increasing border crossings and the complexities of international policy.
