Sen. Durbin Backs an Israel-Hamas Ceasefire with the Releasing of Hostages
As the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) has openly endorsed a truce between Israel and Hamas. The liberation of all captives is a prerequisite to his position. Durbin said in an interview with CNN on Thursday morning, “I think it is, at least when both sides are in agreement. One aspect of this should be the release of people who have been abducted. Released immediately. That ought to be where it all starts. There should be an attempt to have dialogue between the Israelis and the Palestinians.”
This is not the Biden administration’s policy, which supports humanitarian breaks for a limited time but opposes a rapid ceasefire. Addressing a heckler, President Joe Biden underlined the necessity of a “pause” to “get the prisoners out.” A ceasefire, according to the government, may allow Hamas to reorganize and carry out more strikes.
On October 7, Israel was the target of a major terrorist strike by Hamas that left almost 1,400 people dead, most of them civilians. Following their reaction, Israel launched thousands of airstrikes on Gaza, resulting in extensive damage and a full-scale battle. The strikes and worsening humanitarian situations have intensified calls for a truce, even though the precise number of Palestinian casualties is yet unknown.
Despite acknowledging that he had not shared this stance with the White House, Senator Durbin’s support for a ceasefire with a hostage release condition points to the other side’s sincere efforts.
The fact that Hamas constructed a substantial tunnel system beneath heavily populated sections of Gaza adds another layer of complexity to the fight. Through the network-like structure of these tunnels, Hamas fighters are able to carry guns and other supplies while avoiding Israeli bombings. Although it is a difficult job, Israel wants to destroy these tunnels. Neighboring countries expressed indignation when civilian casualties in northern Gaza were caused by an Israeli strike on a piece of the tunnel system.
