During a recent visit to the Krome Detention Center in Miami, Representative Frederica Wilson voiced strong opposition to current immigration enforcement practices. She criticized the conditions at the facility and expressed concern over expansion plans that include building a “tent city” to house additional detainees.
Wilson linked the developments to the Laken Riley Act, a law mandating the detention of undocumented immigrants charged with specific crimes, including lesser infractions. She warned that the policy would lead to broader targeting of undocumented individuals and called for immediate action.
Encouraging citizens to contact lawmakers and participate in demonstrations, Wilson urged the public to stand against what she described as unjust policies. She emphasized the importance of widespread engagement to push for changes in immigration enforcement.
The Laken Riley Act was passed following the 2024 murder of college student Laken Riley by an undocumented immigrant with a prior criminal record. The law also gives state attorneys general the authority to sue the Department of Homeland Security for failure to enforce immigration laws.
