Democratic governor candidate in Georgia, Stacey Abrams is running on a platform of fiscal responsibility. This despite the fact that she is in debt by $200,000, including 77,577 in credit card debt. She is trying to become the first black female governor.
She has laid out tens of millions for new programs that many consider being nothing more than a waste of money. Abrams owes back taxes amounting to $40,201 for 2015 and $13,851 for 2016. She got a job making $96,000 right out of college but she lived above her means to the point that she can’t even pay her taxes. Will the voters in Georgia decide she is fiscally responsible enough to take on the job? I wouldn’t.
Abrams has argued that her financial difficulties make her uniquely qualified to lead Georgia, pointing out that many Americans also struggle with debt. However, her case does appear to be well above the norm. Her $96, 512 in student loan debt is almost three timesthe national average. More notably, her $77,522 in credit card debt is five times the national household average.
Abrams — who would become the first black female governor in the country if elected — also appeared to cite prejudice for her financial woes. Defending her weak financial standing in an op-ed for Fortune, the gubernatorial candidate blamed wealth disparities between white, Latin and black households as partially the result of housing, labor and education discrimination. Despite landing a $95,000 salary position soon after graduating from Yale Law school, Abrams also lamented in her column over the gender pay between women and men.
When she loses will they blame it on gender discrimination, racism or the Russians? My guess is all of the above. You never want to turn your state treasury over to someone who is irresponsible with her own finances. Would Keebler hire the Cookie Monster as a night watchman?
