Tiffany Henyard, the Mayor of Dolton, Illinois, has been making headlines for her unique approach to governance, drawing comparisons to a real-life “Parks and Recreation” scenario. Elected in April 2021, Henyard, a progressive Democrat, has been criticized for her extravagant lifestyle and controversial decisions, despite Dolton being a small town with a median income of $24K per year.
One of Henyard’s most contentious moves was an ordinance stipulating that if she lost the upcoming mayoral election, her successor’s salary would drop from over $200K to $25,000. However, if she won, the salary would remain unchanged. Critics viewed this as a tactic to deter potential competitors.
Henyard’s spending habits have also come under scrutiny. Trustees have demanded receipts for charges on the town’s card, accusing her of unauthorized expenses. Trustee Tammy Brown expressed concern about the lack of transparency in Henyard’s financial dealings.
The mayor’s trip to Las Vegas, supposedly for a conference, raised eyebrows due to the high cost of airfare, including a single roundtrip ticket costing over $3,000. When questioned about these expenses by WGN investigative reporter Ben Bradley, Henyard evaded the questions, leading to further criticism.
Henyard’s social media presence and public appearances often feature her with a professional stylist, makeup artist, and hairdresser, raising questions about the funding for these services. Her use of taxpayer dollars for self-promotion, including billboards featuring her image, has been criticized by election attorney Burt Odelson and others.
Despite facing a recall effort, Henyard continues to maintain a high-profile presence in Dolton. Her approach to politics and governance has made her a controversial figure, with some viewing her actions as an overuse of power.
Henyard did not immediately respond to a request for comment on these matters.
